What's the big deal about this summer's total solar eclipse and why are we in a great place to find out? Those questions and more will be answered on Monday, May 8th when Oregon Tech's Gravity and Space Research Club (GRASP) with assistance from Tualatin High School's (TuHS) Girls Who Code club, will test launch a high altitude weather balloon from Tualatin High's football field in preparation for this summer's August 21st total solar eclipse.
During the solar eclipse, students across the nation will be launching high altitude balloons along the total eclipse path, from Oregon to South Carolina, sending live video and images from near space to NASA. Video and images of a total eclipse from near space have never been captured live across a continent.
