SUMMARY:Health & Wellness Wednesday - Dementia: Caregiving\, Prevention and Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:Our mission is to promote the sharing of health-related resources and information while providing a forum for networking and education for local traditional and alternative health care professionals. Doors open at 7 AM with a light breakfast provided. This January's presentation will be by Bill Cohen with Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants.\n\n\n\nThis power-packed hour of networking and information is focused on the growing issue of dementia as we age: current research and ways to diagnose\, and how to practice prevention and self-care\, whether or not you are currently a caregiver. Attendance is FREE\, for members & non-members. Please bring guests! We do request that you RSVP.\n\n\n\nBill Cohen is a caregiver support group leader and speaker\, an Alzheimer's Association and HOPE Dementia Support Groups volunteer\, Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) \, and a caregiving support consultant. \n\n\n\nHis loving and talented mother\, Sheila\, lost her home to Hurricane Katrina. Then\, she lost her health\, ability to create beautiful art and\, ultimately\, her life due to Alzheimer's. For almost 10 years\, he was her primary caregiver and advocate\, not just her elder son.\n\n\n\nBill will share his story and journey with his late mom and listen to your specific questions and concerns\, and provide advice on how to manage caregiving. \n\n\n\nAs a former caregiver himself\, Bill helps you find ways to be informed so you can care for your own care partner...and yourself. He helps families cope with dementia care by providing guidance and resources\, and by coordinating and collaborating with your support team on the full range of issues. \n\n\n\nBill has completed multiple caregiving and aging courses through the Alzheimer's Association and the Society for Certified Senior Advisors and earned business degrees from Boston and Portland State Universities\, respectively. He has lived in the Portland\, Oregon area for over 35 years\, and lives with his wife of 39 years\, Lori\, in Tualatin.
