Become a Positively Memorable Speaker
Highlights from Jan Carothers, CPC - our February Thrive Speaker
She sang, she amazed, and she connected! Our February Thrive speaker, past president of the Oregon chapter of the National Speakers Association, brought her charisma and shared many great tips on how to improve our speaking skills. Here are a few of her twelve tips.
• As a speaker, you can “carry the torch” for your listeners by being positively memorable and connecting, so they actually remember, share and apply what they heard.
• Break their mental preoccupation - open with a “grabber” - a quote, a question, a statement, a scene or story that startles, intrigues or gives them an engaging experience.
• Every speech is a conversation - though you are doing most of the speaking aloud. Your listeners are always commenting along with you in their minds. Take full advantage of the power of the pause.
• You are the message! Not just your content. Use all your personal resources to connect and influence - your eyes, gestures, expressions, use of space, pace, vocal variety and more.
• When designing your talk, plan the ending first, then the body – your points, evidence, stories and a little spice. Write your opening last. Memorize your opener and closer to begin and end strong.
